Explore Crystal River’s Best Attractions with Insider Tips from a Local
The small coastal city I call home, Crystal River has been making headlines recently. Award winning publications such as Southern Living are calling Crystal River one of “the 10 Most Underrated Destinations in the South.” With all this buzz about Crystal River the scene is changing. However, one thing is always constant, Crystal River is the “manatee capital of the world.”

From HGTV calling Crystal River one of the “top 50 charming small towns”
Crystal River, my home for over a decade, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant community life. As a busy mom, business owner, and founder of Tastes and Tales Food Tours, I’m excited to share my favorite things to do in Crystal River with you.
Let’s dive right in!
Crystal River’s Top Attraction is the Manatee
Manatees flock to our area because we have warm and cozy water jetting through the bottom of our springs. At times the Gulf of Mexico gets chilly for the manatees, so these majestic creatures gather in our waterways in Crystal River. We are known as the land also known as “Seven Rivers” people visit from all over the world to see our chubby mermaid—the manatee! Crystal River is nestled along the west coast of Florida, about an hour north of Tampa and has several ways you can see a manatee.
Recommended Visit Hunter Springs Park

I’ve been lucky enough to encounter manatees up close at Hunter Springs Park with my young son. Hunter Springs Park is 100 percent free entrance (the only Florida spring with no entry fee). However, there is a parking fee unless you can find free parking a few blocks away. It is a public park, and you can really enjoy the water on a weekday, however, it is crowded on weekends. Visiting this park is my favorite thing to do in Crystal River to enjoy the outdoors and waters. You might just see a manatee or simply enjoy the spring waters. Considering other springs may be deeper and harder to manage little kids, this spring comes highly recommended for families with little swimmers.
In my experience the manatees will come swim by you if you are calm and peaceful. I make it practice giving these serene creatures space and enjoy them from a few feet away.
Homosassa Wildlife Park Must See Attraction
Another great way to view a Crystal River manatee is to visit the Ellie Schiller Homosassa Wildlife Park, which is just a few minutes down U.S. Highway 19 to Homosassa. The park is free for children 5 and under. Children ages 6-12 are $5 and ages 13 and up are $13. It offers a boat ride to the main wildlife viewing area and it is worth the slight wait.
You have a good chance of seeing manatees near the nearly 60 year-old “Fish Bowl” which is a floating observatory. Standing on the deck a few weeks ago, my son and I saw two manatees dining on several heads of romaine lettuce. We went down into the fishbowl and could see a little bit, but the historic structure is hard to see out with its thick glass. We highly recommend viewing from the deck and checking out all the other wildlife such as Lu the Hippo (a former roadside attraction). I also enjoyed all the wild birds and wolves.
Unforgettable Manatee Tours
I had the pleasure of taking a trip on Explorida’s Manatee Viewing Tour with my family and we enjoyed it. It’s a great way to sit back and let the professional guide take you through the sites of King’s Bay. They are trained to spot manatees from far away. You can sign up for a tour with Explorida at its location on Citrus Ave, which is in the heart of downtown Crystal River, and of course by phone and online. There’s also a new activity available at Explorida that I look forward to experiencing is renting an e-bike and tooling around town.
Top Activity is to Rent a Kayak
Kayak Through the Crystal Clear Waters of Three Sisters Springs
Three Sisters Springs is the crown jewel of Crystal River’s spring system. The pristine, turquoise waters of the springs are a kayaker’s paradise. Paddle through the calm waters, surrounded by lush vegetation, and keep an eye out for manatees, turtles, and a variety of fish species.
The springs are part of the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, which means they’re protected and remain in their natural state. The best time to visit is during the winter months when the manatees seek refuge in the warm waters of the springs.
Insider Tip: Rent a clear kayak for a truly immersive experience. The transparent kayak allows you to see the underwater world beneath you as you paddle. More information on clear kayak tours, sunset and night glow paddle tours check out Paddles Outdoor Rentals.

Scarecrow Festival (October)
The Crystal River Scarecrow Festival is held second Saturday of October bad goes back to 1989. This does rank as my favorite festival activity in Crystal River. This festival takes place in Heritage Village along Citrus Avenue with the local fire truck handing out fireman hats to the kids to top local food trucks. This is as folksy as festivals come with costumes, games and fall photo spots. It is still warm here in Florida, so do not bother with your fall boots and sweaters yet. However, you can enjoy a pumpkin spice latte at Cattle Dog Coffee Roasters. This is a free thing to do in Crystal River for the whole family. More information see Discover Crystal River and the City of Crystal River for updates.

Christmas Festival (December)
The Crystal River Christmas Festival is always the first Friday evening of December. This is all about Santa, tree lighting and enjoying the holiday season with a little wine by the bounce houses. Florida Manatee Festival (January)
This festival takes over downtown Crystal River for the third weekend in January since 1987. Last year, the festival had over 400 vendors with a large variety of goods. If you head down to King’s Bay Park, you will find live music and adult beverages. People come from all over to see the manatee this weekend and they line up to take buses to the springs to get a view. My recommendation is getting in line early if you are on a mission to see the manatees during the festival. This event has a gate fee and does offer some discounts if you check their website.
Art on the Avenue (recurring event)
This is a series of seasonal art shows on Citrus Avenue with entertainment. This is an insider thing to do in Crystal River and we want to spread the word. Local artists and vendors set-up near Heritage Village among the local galleries. It’s a great way to support local artists and businesses by coming out. Crystal River Main Street Association organizes this important cultural event. It is free thing to do in Crystal River and is open to the public.

Elvis in Crystal River
Tourists still come to Crystal River wanting to walk in the footsteps of the King. Back in the summer of 1961 while filming the movie “Follow That Dream” Elvis stayed in Crystal River. Below is a self-guided Elvis tour of the places he visited in Crystal River. Top things to do if you want to walk in Elvis’ footsteps through Crystal River.
Self-Guided Elvis Tour in Crystal River
The Port Paradise Hotel
Elvis stayed at this hotel, which was located on the waterfront in Crystal River. It was the primary lodging for Elvis and the film crew during the shoot. The actual room he stayed in no longer exists, but you can visit the hotel and enjoy the waterfront scene.
Fort Island Gulf Beach
Elvis visited this beach while in the area, which was used as a filming location for several scenes in *Follow That Dream.* The scenic, tranquil beach became a part of the movie’s backdrop, capturing the natural beauty of Crystal River.
World Shells Treasure Chest
This old building is now a “gift and nautical décor” store, but it used to be a boat store. A local historian told me Elvis bought a boat here when he was here filming.

Silly Thing to Do in Crystal River
Florida is known for its quirky roadside attractions from the Fountain of Youth in St. Augustine to Whimzeyland in Safety Harbor. Why not get a jaw-dropping photo with a 12 foot gorilla?

Crystal River has some monkey business happening on U.S. Highway 19 by GS Auto Towing with its 12 foot gorilla. It’s worth getting a silly photo.
Parks in Crystal River
Crystal River is a coastal city with scenic parks to visit. Below is a short list of the parks to visit. These are my favorite parks to visit to enjoy the great outdoors and views of the water.
Explore King’s Bay Park

This charming park offers a cozy spot for fishing off the pier and enjoying a barbecue, complete with a small, covered pavilion and a playground for children. The restrooms are conveniently located near the parking lot, and the park’s compact size means minimal walking. Kayak launches are also available. Our favorite things to do in the park is to play on the playground and then walk along the waterfront and docks.

Please note that parking costs $5, which must be paid at a small kiosk on the left side as you enter the gravel parking area (this is our least favorite feature of the park). Although the kiosk may be slightly hard to spot, it works efficiently. Be sure to display your parking ticket on your dashboard to avoid a minimum fine of $50 as the park rangers are vigilant in making sure you pay for parking or pay a ticket. Once you’ve paid, you can come and go throughout the day without needing to pay again.
Explore Fort Island Trail Park for Incredible Sunsets

It’s the area’s only beach in Crystal River. Fort Island Trail Park & Beach is top sight in Crystal River, located at the end of a scenic drive through scenic sawgrass fields. It’s the perfect place to bring the kids for a swim in the shallow waters, with showers available for rinsing off. There is a boardwalk and rocky areas that make for great sunset photo ops.
Crystal River Archeological State Park Mind-Blowing History
Crystal River State Archaeological Park is a captivating historical site located along the picturesque Gulf Coast. This park is home to one of the most significant pre-Columbian Native American sites in the southeastern United States, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into ancient cultures. The park features a series of impressive mounds, including temple and burial mounds, which were constructed by Native Americans over 2,000 years ago. As you explore the park, you’ll find informative exhibits and a museum that provides deeper insights into the area’s rich history and the people who once thrived here.
With its combination of natural beauty and historical significance, Crystal River State Archaeological Park is a must-see destination for history buffs, nature lovers, and anyone looking to connect with Florida’s ancient past.
A great park to walk and enjoy the waterfront, however, there is no playground. it is a great place to enjoy cooler weather and a hike. There is a fee $3 per vehicle.
Notable Sites in Crystal River to Visit
Old Crystal River Cemetery
My husband and I cannot be the only ones who enjoy visiting old cemeteries and taking in its somber beauty. We look at gravestones and dates, talk about what could have happened. There is a historic cemetery that dates to the 1860s and does have two civil war soldiers buried within its gates.
Replica Civil War Scow
Spirit is the name of the Civil War-era scow that local boat builders presented in 2013. There were skirmishes of the coast in Crystal River and the “The scow was the semi-truck of the time,” said Bill Whalen, who is part of the group from a 2013 Spectrum News article about the scow. You can find it today on display in front of Paddletail Lodge.
